Nonylphenol (APs) and nonylphenol ethoxylate (APEOs), NP and NPEP (belong to AP and APEOs family respectively) are chemical auxiliaries used in various industries. They are good emulsified agents and wetting agents. Therefore, they are widely used in various industries such as textiles and leather processing, pulp and paper manufacturing, metal processing and agriculture. They should also be used in indoor detergents and be used as auxiliary components of insect killing agents and biocides. Because APs and APEOs are not biodegradable, when they are released into the environment, they can cause serious environmental problems and may lead to feminization of male fish. As a result, the capacity of fish production or reproduction is reduced, thus reducing the total number of fish to the edge of danger. Because of these environmental problems, EC has decided to limit the use of two substances, APs and APEOs. According to directive 2003/53/EC, nonylphenol and nonylphenol ethoxylate have been added to the appendix of directive 76/769/EEC. According to the directive, nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol ethoxylate (APEO) exceeding 0.1% (WW) limits have been banned. These compounds are prohibited for the following purposes:
Cleaning of industrial and public institutions
Indoor cleaning
Textile and leather processing
Emulsified agents in agricultural soaking solution
Metalworking
Pulp and paper manufacture
Cosmetics
Other personal care products
As an auxiliary ingredient of brake agents and biocides.
Only when NP and NPEO can be recycled in use can they be used in these fields.
