Macao trade and Investment Promotion Council   

The People's Republic of China and Portuguese government signed the Sino Portuguese Joint Declaration on the future of Macao in 1987. According to the terms of the declaration, China resumed its exercise of sovereignty over Macao in December 20, 1999. As a special administrative region of China, Macao enjoys a high degree of autonomy. It can retain its political, economic and social system for fifty years, and has independent administrative, legislative and judicial powers. At the same time, Macao can continue to enjoy preferential treatment of free ports and independent customs areas. The central government's confidence in the future prosperity and stability of Macao will help ensure the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" policy.
